Dundy County volleyball squad captures title at Hitchcock County Tournament

TRENTON -- Dundy County took first place at the Hitchcock County High School volleyball invite Saturday with a win over Wheatland.

Hayes Center claimed third by defeating host Hitchcock County in three sets.

The tourney also featured Arapahoe and Cheylin playing in both the Trenton and Culbertson Dundy County went undefeated at the tourney with a two-set win over Wheatland, 25-14, 25-16, in the championship game.

For the second time at the tourney, Annette Case led her team with ace serves, finishing with five. She also had 19 set assists.

Brook Olson and Emily Hudson both finished with six kills in the final game of the day with

Hudson adding two solo blocks in the effort.

Wheatland's Carlie Sis and Ashley Day both had two kills, while teammate Julie Day finished with one ace to help lead their team to a second-place finish.

In the consolation game, Hayes Center used three sets to defeat Hitchcock County, 22-25, 25-22, 25-17.

For the Falcons, freshman Megan Cole led her team with 10 kills, while senior Kate Voss had six. Teammate Laci Brennan finished with five of her own.

Hitchcock County head coach Jon Graff said his team played very well the first set, picking up a win.

"In the second set, we got up but couldn't finish," he said. "By the end, the girls were tired and we dropped balls we wouldn't have normally dropped."

Dundy County opened the tourney with a two-set sweep of the Falcons, 25-21, 25-16.

Emily Hudson led the Tigers with three aces and 20 points. Brook Olson finished with a game-high 9 kills, followed by eight from teammate Shelby Wilson, while Naomi Matthews had six.

Annette Case had 24 assists in the setting department along with five kills.

For the Falcons, Laken Cook served up two aces in the opening set.

Hitchcock County coach Jon Graff said his team played an excellent first set against a team they had seen already once this season.

"The girls came out and played very strong, but two late service errors proved to be the

difference. We lost focus in the second set but rallied at the end to score six straight points," he said.

Dundy County 2,

Cheylin 0

Dundy County went undefeated in pool play with a 25-17, 25-13 win over Cheylin.

The Tigers proved tough from the service line with four aces from Annette Case and two each from Emily Hodges, Jessica Davis and Vanessa Shill.

Shelby Wilson knocked down six kills and Naomi Matthews five.

For Cheylin, Kaedra Dixson had two service aces, while Jessica Marshall and Aubrey Kehlbreck each had one.

Hitchcock County 2,

Cheylin 0

Hitchcock County picked up its first win of the season, defeating Cheylin, 25-21, 25-15.

For the Falcons, Kate Voss was 13 of 13 from the service line with three aces.

Megan Cole finished with a team-high five kills, while Voss nailed down three.

"The girls did a nice job of finishing strong," Graff said. "It was a very satisfying first win for us."

Wheatland 2,

Arapahoe 1

Wheatland took the game, 26-24, 22-25, 25-22, led by 10 kills and four ace blocks from Carlie Sis. Roxanne Hagan had two aces in the pool play game.

Arapahoe's Angela Dawson served up three aces, while teammate Abbey Breinig finished with three kills and three ace blocks.

Hayes Center 2,

Arapahoe 1

With three ace serves from Mary Gohl, Hayes Center defeated Arapahoe, 25-18, 16-25, 25-9.

Dove Messersmith added another two aces and tied with Amy Cox for 10 points scored in the win.

For Arapahoe, Abbey Breinig had two kills, while Alesa Paulsen and Kelsi Ervin both finished with an ace block.

Hayes Center coach Marian Richards said her team did a fantastic job of playing together the first and third sets.

"Our coverage was where it needed to be most of the time," she said.

Wheatland 2,

Hayes Center 0

In the 25-23, 25-16 win, Wheatland's Ashley Day served up six aces and fnished with 15 points.

Kylie Hanson had 13 set assists and Carlie Sis had eight kills.

Southwest 2nd,

Cambridge 3rd

at Elm Creek

ELM CREEK -- Several area teams competed in the Elm Creek tournament.

Southwest defeated Cambridge 12-25, 25-15, 25-21 and Hershey 25-17, 25-22 before losing to Elm Creek in the championship 27-25, 25-12.

After losing to Southwest, Cambridge defeated Axtell 19-25, 25-19, 25-21 and Pleasanton 25-6, 25-16 to finish in third place.

Wauneta-Palisade finished the day 1-2.

The Broncos lost to Elm Creek 25-22, 23-25, 11-25 and Hershey 25-15, 25-21.

They defeated Southern Valley 23-25, 25-14, 25-13.

Southern Valley also lost to Axtell 25-15, 25-16 and Pleasanton 25-19, 25-22 to finish the day winless at 0-3.

Cambridge and Southwest will be at the McCook Invite next Saturday.

Southern Valley will be at the Blu Hill tournament Saturday.

Wauneta-Palisade will be at Chase County on Thursday.
