Bison softball team wins home tourney

The McCook Bison softball team went 3-0 at home this weekend to win its home tournament.

Coach Dale Lortz's squad posted wins over Scottsbluff, Cozad and Lexington.

Scottsbluff lost for the first time this season, as McCook pounded out 12 runs on 13 hits to beat the Bearcats 12-2, in five innings.

McCook`s Taryn Placzek allowed four hits striking out five and walking none.

After a Scottsbluff scored in the top of the first, McCook answered with four in the bottom of the inning.

Following a Kori Collins base hit and a Kim Serbousek walk, Michelle McKenna had an RBI single. Jillian Bryant then knocked in two with a single. Andrea Soden hit a ball to left field that was mishandled, allowing Bryant to score.

McCook added two more in the second. Austin Wilson singled, stole second and scored on a Collins base hit. Kayla Wilson drove in Collins with a sac fly. After Michelle McKenna reached on an error, Bryant drove her in with a double.

Scottsbluff scored in the third, making the score 6-2.

The Bison scored three more runs in the fourth. Serbousek singled, Michelle McKenna and Kayla Wilson each doubled in the bottom of the fourth. Jessica Einsphar, running for Wilson scored on a passed ball.

Marissa Wallace led off the fifth with a pinch hit single. Collins drove in Einsphar, who was running for Wallace with a single. Kayla Wilson drove in Collins for run number 12.

In their second game, McCook defeated the Cozad Haymakers 6-0.

Stephanie Douglas allowed four hits, no walks and struck out 12 batters pitching for the Bison.

McCook scored two in the second. After Kayla Wilson singled and Jillian Bryant walked, Andrea Soden and Austin Wilson singled them in.

In the third, Bryant doubled in Kim Serbousek to score the third run of the game.

McCook scored two more in the fourth. Natalie Brooks walked followed by Ausitn Wilson and Kori Collins singles to load the bases. Michelle McKenna singled in two more Bison runs.

The sixth run came in the seventh when Serbousek and Kayla Wilson singled.

Bryant then drove in Serbousek to score the final run.

McCook had 11 hits in the game off of Cozad pitching.

The Bison used three pitchers in the championship beat Class B`s sixth ranked Lexington Minutemaids 1-0.

Kirstie Hiatt pitched the first four innings. Marissa Wallace pitched two innings to pick up the win.

Stephanie Douglas pitched the last inning to get the save. They gave up four hits and walked three. They struck out seven Lexington batters.

McCook scored the only run of the game in the sixth inning.

Kim Serbousek led off with an infield hit.

Michelle McKenna walked and was run for by Kody Korus. Serbousek was forced out at third on a Kayla Wilson ground ball. Jessica Einsphar then ran for Wilson.

Jillian Bryant hit a ground ball to the shortstop and Korus beat the throw to third.

Lindsey Lawson ground a ball to the left of the third baseman and Korus beat the throw home to score the only run of the game.

The next two batters ground out to leave the bases loaded.

Lexington threatened in the seventh when Lexington drew a walk to lead off. Douglas then came in to pitch.

She struck out the next batter. Lex then got a base hit to put runners on first and second with one out. Douglas struck out the next batter and then Lex ground out to end the game.

"This was a good tournament for the kids to win," said McCook coach Dale Lortz. "We improved from last week in the hitting department," he added.

"I was proud of the kids the way they played more relaxed and confident."

McCook plays at Lexington tonight, with JV action begining at 5 p.m.
