HOLYOKE, Colo. -- Richard Ray Modrell, 82, died Monday (Aug. 9, 2004) at the Prairie Vista Nursing Home.
He was born Feb. 25, 1922, at McCook, to Walter and Bessie (Doyle) Modrell. He grew up on the family farm north of McCook and attended school in Frontier County.
On May 8, 1943, he married Violet Isaac in Oberlin. In 1946, they moved to Corvallis, Ore., where they lived for several years. He worked at the Oregon State College Turkey Farm and at Clemons Saw Mill. The family moved to Big Springs in 1966 and then to Julesburg, Colo., in 1969, where he farmed and worked at the Great Western Sugar Factory. He retired in 1988 and moved to Holyoke in 1992.
He was baptized and a member of the United Methodist Church.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one son, Richard J. Modrell in 1990; three grandchildren, Kerry, Sherri and Jan Gina Modrell; three brothers, Marshall, Dale and Howard; two sisters, Eleanor Peters and Ardis Davis.
Survivors include his wife, Violet Modrell; two sons, Jim and wife, Carolyn Modrell of Portland, Ore., and Roger and wife, Rhonda Modrell of Sterling, Colo; three daughters, Shirley and husband, Pete Heid of Julesburg, Karen and husband, Dale Jacoby of Holyoke and Rhonda Jones of Sedgwick, Colo.; 33 grandchildren; 68 great-grandchildren; and eight great-great-grandchildren.
Services will be Thursday, 1 p.m., at Gerk Funeral Home Chapel. Interment will take place at a later date at Rose Hill Cemetery in Stratton with a graveside service.
Visitation is today until 7 p.m. at the funeral home.
