ARAPAHOE -- Vernon D. Gardner, 79, died Sunday (Aug. 8, 2004) at St. John's Good Samaritan Center in Kearney.
He was born Aug. 30, 1924, at Arapahoe to George and Daisy (Morse) Gardner.
He served in the Air Force during World War II as a tail gunner on a B-17, completing 30 missions.
On May 9, 1945, he married Marjorie Stagemeyer at Beaver City. They farmed in the Arapahoe and Edison areas, retiring in 1993. He served as a Horizon Seed dealer during the 1970s. They moved to Arapahoe 25 years ago and traveled to South Texas during the winter months.
He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church at Arapahoe and the American Legion Post No. 343 at Edison.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one granddaughter, Brittany Elizabeth Gardner; and one great-granddaughter, Katrina Gardner.
Survivors include his wife, Marjorie of Arapahoe; three sons, Dennis and wife, Margie Gardner of Edison, Terry and wife, Laurie Gardner of Hillsboro, Ore., and Ron and wife, Darcy Gardner of Edison; two brothers, Don and wife, Norma Gardner of Beaver City and Duane and wife, Joyce Gardner of Arapahoe; five grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be Wednesday, 2:30 p.m., at Trinity Lutheran Church in Arapahoe with the Rev. Carl Lilienkamp officiating. Burial, with military rites provided by Edison American Legion Post No. 343, will be at the Arapahoe Cemetery.
Viewing and visitation is today until 8 p.m., and Tuesday, 9 a.m.-8 p.m., at Wenburg Funeral Home in Arapahoe. Viewing and visitation will continue Wednesday at the church until the time of the service.
