ALMA -- Edwin Wilford Witte, 87, died Monday (Aug. 2, 2004) at the Colonial Villa Good Samaritan Center in Alma.
He was born April 30, 1917, to Clement and Elisabeth (Ostdiek) Witte in Lawrence. He attended school at the St. Stephens School near Lawrence. In 1929, the family made their home on a farm south of Cambridge, where he attended school at Furnas County District No. 45.
After his education, he farmed with his father. In 1944, he moved to Orleans and continued to farm with his brother, Wilbur.
He was a member of the St. Mary's Catholic Church of Orleans, the Knights of Columbus Council in Orleans, past chairman of Orleans City Board and Justice of the Peace for several years.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and six brothers, Alvin, Gilbert, Wilbur, Herbert, LeRoy and Arthur Witte.
Survivors include his brother, Gerald Witte and wife, Jean of Cambridge; three sisters, Irene Kubik of Cambridge, Vera Laughlin of Cannon City, Colo., and Patricia Young and her husband, Eugene of Cambridge; two sisters-in-law, Alice Witte of Cambridge and Ruth Witte of Denver, Colo.; and 43 nieces and nephews.
Mass of Christian burial is Thursday, 10 a.m., at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Orleans with the Revs. Harlan Waskowiak and John Berkel officiating. Interment will be in the Mount Calvary Catholic Cemetery in Orleans.
Visitation is today until 5 p.m., at Mitchell Funeral Home in Orleans.
Rosary services are today, 7 p.m., at the church.
A memorial has been established in his memory to the St. Mary's Catholic Church in Orleans, Colonial Villa Good Samaritan Center or the Harlan County Health Systems in Alma.
