L. Ilene Ruf

Leola Ilene Premer Ruf was born Nov. 7, 1921, to Frank Premer and Ellen (Nellie) Daniels Premer south of Bartley in Red Willow County. She died on July 23, 2004 in Cambridge at the age of 82.

She married John A. Ruf on April 21, 1946. They were the parents of three children, Marilyn Sue, Randy Allen and Kaye Lynette.

Ilene graduated from Bartley High School in 1938 and attended classes at Kearney State Normal College. She taught in country schools in the Lebanon area for seven years and in Lebanon for one year. She lived the life of a farm wife for many years, always raising chickens and tending a large garden. She was elected to the Wilsonville School, a position she held until retiring in 1983. She believed strongly in the value of a good education.

Ilene was an active member of the Wilsonville Methodist Church serving as a Sunday school teacher and the church treasurer for most of her adult life. She later joined the Cambridge United Methodist Church. She was a member of the United Methodist Women, Wilsonville Women's Club, the IHO Club, the Double Eight Club and the American Legion Auxiliary. She loved to give programs for these organizations, and she collected many poems, stories and articles for this purpose. She was a leader of the Sunflower Lassies 4-H Club for many years. She enjoyed traveling, gardening, sewing, reading, needlework and spending time with her family. She especially loved the everyday presence of her grandchildren, Tyler and Chelsea.

Ilene was preceded in death by her parents, Frank and Nellie Premer; her husband, John; a daughter, Kaye Lynette in infancy; two grandchildren, Chris and Robin Ruf; two sisters, Marie Moore and husband, Lark and Darlene Premer; three brothers, Noel Premer, Elbert Premer and Harvey Premer; parents-in-law, Henry and Mary Ruf; brothers-in-law, Henry Ruf and wife, Bly, Bud Baughman, Gerald Stevens, Glenn Atteberry and Gilibert Goodenberger; and sisters-in-law, Esther Meader and husband, Paul and Leah Lomax and husband, Everett.

She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Marilyn and Dave Moore, Lincoln; son and daughter-in-law, Randy and Brenda Ruf, Cambridge; grandchildren, Tyler John Ruf and Chelsea Marie Ruf, Cambridge; one brother-in-law, Manuel Ruf and wife, Margalee; sisters-in-law, Dorothy Premer, Vesta Premer, Doris Premer, Katherine Atteberry, Lydia Ruf, Ann Baughman, Ruby Slavens, Ramona Fisher and husband, LeRoy and Margie Hunter and husband, Floyd; and many nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were today, 10:30 a.m., at the Trinity United Methodist Church in Cambridge. Burial was in Bartley Cemetery. Memorials may be designated to the Trinity United Methodist Church or Hope Builders.
