ATWOOD -- Lenora Evelyn (Searl) Spicka, 89, died Thursday (July 15, 2004) at the Good Samaritan Center in Atwood.
She was born Aug. 10, 1914, to Fay L. and Myrtle (Lukins) Searl near the town of Holbrook. She grew up in Gosper County, Chase County and Lamar. She then lived on a farm east of Imperial where she completed grade school in a country school. She graduated from Chase County High School in 1933 and she earned a teaching certificate by taking normal training. After the first term of teaching, she attended Kearney State Teacher's College. She taught school for several years in Chase and Dundy Counties.
On April 19, 1941, she married Frank J. Spicka of Beardsley, Kan. The couple farmed together. Her husband preceded her in death in 1979. She retired to New Mexico. She later moved to Denver, Colo., then to McDonald. She entered the Good Samaritan Center in Atwood in 2000.
She was a member of St. John's Nepomucene Catholic Church for 42 years, the Christian Mothers Altar Society, the Holy Family Church and altar society in Deming and Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Atwood.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Frank; parents; sister, Irene Whipps; son, Norman "Joe"; and brother, Art Searl.
Survivors include her sister, Vesper Pearson of Deming, N.M.
Mass of Christian burial is Saturday, 10 a.m., at St. John Nepomucene Catholic Church in rural Atwood with the Rev. Dana Clark officiating. Interment will be in the St. John's Cemetery.
Visitation is today until 9 p.m., at Williams Funeral Home.
A parish vigil and rosary will be today, 7 p.m., at the funeral home.
Memorials can be given to the Atwood Good Samaritan Center and St. John's Nepomucene Catholic Church and can be left at the funeral home.
