Lindsay Dame won't have to travel too far to continue her softball career.

Dame, a four-year letterwinner for the McCook High School softball team and a six-year veteran of the Rebels' summer fastpitch program, signed a letter of intent Sunday night to play at McCook Community College.

Dame, who started at third base on four straight Bison state qualifying teams, will play shortstop for the Indians. It's the position she played for the Rebels.

Dame chose MCC over offers from York College and Fort Hays State (Kan.) University.

She said she felt comfortable with her decision to stay home.

"I wanted to make it easier because my mom will still be paying for food," Dame said. "I wanted to stay closer to home my first couple years. I just wanted to play."

Dame started a few games her freshman season, and then started every game for the next three years.

The Bison softball team, coached by Dale Lortz, posted a 30-3 record in the fall of 2003, including a 1-2 mark at the Nebraska Class B state tournament.

"We were very good," Dame said. "We learned how to get along with everyone. It was fun."

With Dame playing shortstop and current MCC coach Scott Wacker as one of the coaches, the Rebels went to state for six years.

The Rebels won state and national titles, placed second at state twice, were second at the national quaifying tournament and placed fourth at regionals.

"Lindsay's a great kid and a blue-chipper in this state," Wacker said. "She's a great student-athlete and her work ethic is outstanding.

"She's the first one at practice, the last to leave and wants extra. She firms up the left-side of the infield and gives us speed on the bases. She will lead-off or bat second (in the order).

"She will have an immediate impact. The basic fundamentals and good attitude are there."

Wacker said Dame's presence should benefit the program's recruting.

"She's played at a higher level than a lot of the other kids have. It gives our program a little more credibility."

Dame, the daughter of Doug and Brenda Dame, posted a 4.0 grade point average during her four years at McCook High School.

She plans to be a pharmacy major.
