'A place of peace and prayer'

Parishioners walk among the statues of the renovated "Our Lady of Fatima" shrine Sunday morning, at St. Germanus Catholic Church in Arapahoe. At Mass and at a community lunch following the processional and Stations of the Cross, churchgoers celebrated the completion of the first phase of the renovation project and the hard work and dedication of the caretaker, Richard Snyder and organist Doris Snyder of Arapahoe. The Snyders were married at St. Germanus 58 years ago in October. The first phase of the enhancement project included trimming trees, removing overgrown underbrush, incorporating new landscaping (designed by Anne Kennedy of McCook and planted by Common Scents, McCook), burying a soaker irrigation system (installed by Lammel's Plumbing) and painting the white statue pedestals terra cotta. Plaques were moved from the front of the pedestals to the side, to encourage on-lookers to walk around the shrine. Phase II will include lighting and a meditation area with benches.
