Since it was by foot that man first began to move around, and since man is naturally competitive, it stands to reason that men early on began to see who could get from one point to another the quickest. And presto, the footrace was invented. It is still going on today. While some of the shorter races--the hundred-yard dash, the 40-yard run in football, the 60' race between bases in baseball, and the 90' fast break on the basketball court -- are among the most exciting races, there has been great interest in the longer races. It all began in Marathon, Greece.
