Dr. Lawrence 'Larry' Burns

LOVELAND, Colo. -- Dr. Lawrence T. "Larry" Burns, 83, died Thursday (May 13, 2004) in the Hospice Care Unite of McKee Medical Center in Loveland, Colo.

He was born March 14, 1921, in Crookston, Minn., to Leo and Margaret (Abernathy) Burns.

On March 20, 1943, he married Donna M. Johnson in Riverside, Calif.

He was first lieutenant in the U.S. Army from 1942 to 1946 serving during World War II in the Aleutian Islands.

After graduating from the California College of Chiropody in 1949, he and his wife moved to McCook where he practiced podiatric medicine until his retirement in 1982. He was a national respected leader and innovator in the podiatric profession. The couple co-founded and operated Burns Podiatric Laboratory, Inc., until Donna's death in 1983.

On April 29, 1984, he married Dorothy Harr in Fort Worth, Texas.

He was involved in many aspects of the McCook community and remained actively involved in the laboratory business long after retirement.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Donna; son, Dr. Dennis Burns; step-son, Raymond Harr; brothers, Leo Burns, Robert Burns; and sister, Margaret Jones.

Survivors include his wife, Dorothy of Fort Collins, Colo.; sons, Dr. Michael Burns and wife, Peg of Fort Collins, Dr. Gregory Burns and wife, Lynn of Kearney and Paul Burns and wife, Susan of Yora Linda, Calif.; daughter, Mary O'Dea and husband, Pat of Loveland, Colo.; step-children, Phil Harr and wife, Donna of McCook and Dimis Harr of North Platte; ten grandchildren; five step-grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Services are Wednesday, 10:30 a.m., at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in McCook with the Rev. Gary Brethour officiating. Inurnment will be Calvary Cemetery.

The rosary will be recited today, 7 p.m., at Herrmann Memorial Chapel in McCook.

Memorials may be given in his name and left at the funeral home.
