Alice May Jewell Coyle was born to Zelotus G. Jewell and Alice V. Nickles Jewell June 15, 1926, in McCook. She passed away at her home on the farm north of McCook, where she had lived all her life, on Saturday, May 1, 2004, at the age of 77. She was the only surviving child in her family. Alice May's mother died six days after her birth and Almira Jewell, her grandmother, came to help her father raise her.
Alice attended the Center Point School through 8th grade and graduated from the Nebraska School of Agriculture, Curtis, in 1944. She taught school at Center Point and Spring Creek Schools in Frontier County. She also worked at St. Catherine's Hospital when the war created a need.
On May 6, 1945, she was united in marriage to John Francis Coyle of Culbertson. There were six children born of this union.
Alice held various offices and served on boards in several organizations. She worked as a volunteer 4-H club leader for more than 20 years, was an extension homemaker/family community education club member, member of the Garden Prairie First United Methodist Church, W.I.F.E. Women Involved in Farm Economics Chapter, Nebraska Wheat Growers Auxiliary Wheathearts, American Legion Auxiliary, and a member of the Frontier County Historical Society.
Alice was preceded in death by two infant sons, John Wayne Coyle and William Lynn Coyle; sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Verna and Ervin Coyle; and brother-in-law, Paul Warnock.
She is survived by her husband, John Francis Coyle of McCook; daughter, Patty Harris of Tucson, Ariz.; granddaughter, Tracy Bradley of Denver, Colo.; great-grandson, Jessy Bradley and his wife, Jana; and great-great-grandsons, Daron and Taylor Bradley of Commerce City, Colo.; grandson Charles Harris and great-granddaughters, Christena and Carol Eve Harris of St. Francis, Kan.; daughter, Mary Alice and husband, Richard Corman of Edgar; granddaughters, Angela Corman of Tulsa, Okla., and Crystal Corman of Nakorn Pathom, Thailand; grandson, Kelly Corman of Lincoln; daughter, Donna and husband, Bill Liess, Greeley, Colo.; grandson, Jason Liess of Fort Collins, Colo.; and granddaughter, Sara Liess of Greeley; son, John Coyle Jr., of McCook and grandson, Trey Coyle; sister-in-law, Velma Warnock of Culbertson; and various other family members and friends.
Interment will be in the Garden Prairie Cemetery, north of McCook on highway 83.
Services are Saturday, May 8, 4 p.m., at Herrmann Funeral Home in McCook with the Rev. Dr. Jeff Thurman officiating.
