McCook 9-10, 7-8 boys track teams place first at North Platte

NORTH PLATTE -- McCook's boys track teams in grades 9-10 and 7-8 took the team titles at the North Platte Invite on Tuesday with several meet records beet in the process.

The McCook 9-10 girls placed second with 89 points. North Platte won the division with 101 points.

Freshman runner John Swanhorst broke the meet record in the 195 intermediate hurdles with a time of 25.7 seconds, bettering the record of Ross Jones. In the mile, Josh Cherry ran a time of 4 minutes, 37 seconds, beating Shawn McMurtrey's record.

Swanhorst earned a second individual gold medal in the 110 high hurdles with a time of 16.7. In both hurdling events, Swanhorst was followed by Jones in second and Brandon Kotschwar in fourth.

Tony Purvis took the 100 meter dash title with a time of 11.7, closely followed by teammate Jeff Klug at 11.8. Ryan Bedore claimed the pole vault title with a height of 12 feet, 6 inches.

And McCook swept the relay events, winning the 400 relay in 45.5 seconds, the 1600 relay in 3:38.1 and the medly in 3:58.8.

The boys performed very well, with several matching or beating their season's best times and distances, according to McCook coach Tom Sughroue. "It was great to see the boys step up and perform," he said.

McCook's Ashlee Huffman finished first in the 9-10 girls discus with a meet record throw of 110 feet. The mark was also her personal record.

Amy Beckenhauer won the 200-meter dash with a time of 29.1 seconds and was second in the 100 with a time of 13.9.

Teammate Brianna Ward was sixth in the 100 in 14.4.

Sara Montey won the pole vault, clearing 8 feet. Teammate Andrea Soden was fifth at 7-6.

Meghan Ecker placed third in the 400 at 1:06.5.

Emily Geschwentner and Jennifer Herron placed 4-5 in the 1600 with times of 6:38.5 and 8:53.

Kathy Whelan was third in the long jump at 14-4 3/4.

The Bison 400 and medley relay teams placed second with times of 55.9 and 4:56.7.

The 1600 relay placed third in 4:38.4.

In the 7-8 boys events, Mke Knott led the Bison with three gold-medal performances including the high jump with a personal best of 5-6.

He also won the 75 meter hurdles in 11.7 seconds and ran a leg on the 51.6 second 400 meter relay team of Derek Lake, Paul Douglass and Mitch Green.

JD Stone, on loan from St. Patrick School in McCook along with Cory Gaston, was a double-event winner, taking the long jump with a mark of 17-3 and the triple jump at 34-2.5.

A.J. Judd also notched a first-place finish in the discus with a throw of 121-4.

On the girls' side, Austin Wilson finished with two gold medals, including the shot put on a throw of 28-2. She also ran a leg on the winning 400 relay team of Julia Polly, Sarah Craw and Jessica Einspahr with a season's best time of 55.4.

Other first-place finishers on the day included Cassie Olson in the pole vault with a leap of 7 feet even, followed by Craw in second place. Marissa Wallace won the discus on a throw of 90-6.

The McCook girls 7-8 squad placed third in the team standings with 105 points.
