HITCHCOCK COUNTY -- Donald Edward Vrbas, 72, died Monday (May 5, 2004) east of Trenton due to a motor vehicle and train accident.

He was born Oct. 13, 1931, to Stanley M. and Alby (Chvatal) Vrbas in Stratton. He grew up in Stratton and attended Stratton High School.

On Jan. 29, 1952, he married May Lou Lorens. The lived in Palisade before moving to Culbertson. He was employed by the Electric Hose Company in McCook before working for the H&RW Irrigation District in Hitchcock County. Following his retirement in 1994, he began working part-time for the Hitchcock County Roads Department.

He was a member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church in McCook.

Survivors include his wife, Mary Lou of Culbertson; two sons, Jerald Vrbas and wife, Tami of Palisade and James Vrbas and wife, Joy of McCook; four daughters, Denise Bland and husband, Robert of San Diego, Calif., Mary Ann Sughroue-Vrbas of Culbertson, Cynthia Schwarz and husband, Keith of Phoenix, Ariz., and Julie Hauxwell and husband, Jason of Culbertson; one brother, Stanley Vrbas and wife, Nadine of Stratton; two sisters, Dorothy Cahoj of Atwood and Janice Olson of Denver, Colorado; nine grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Services are Friday, 10:30 a.m., at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Stratton with the Rev. Bernard Lorenc officiating. Inurnment will be in Rose Hill Cemetery in Stratton.

The rosary will be recited today, 7 p.m., at the church.

Memorials may be given in his name and left at the church.
