Schoenfish retires after 33 years

CAMBRIDGE -- Cambridge High School boys basketball and golf coach Del Schoenfish will retire after serving 33 years as a coach and teacher in the school district.

Schoenfish guided the Cambridge boys basketball coach to the Class C2 state championship this season.

He also coached the Cambridge boys golf team to state titles.

In addition to the state title, Schoenfish served as an assistant football coach and received a Level IV Career Milestone from the Nebraska Coaches Association in basketball and golf.

Schoenfish was twice elected president of the Nebraska Coaches Association.

He was also named U.S. Regional Coach of the Year.

Schoenfish, who spent five years at Valentine High School, was a science teacher at Cambridge.

According to the Cambridge Clarion, Schoenfish would like to continue coaching.

Four other Cambridge teachers with more than 20 years of service to the school district also retired.

They are Margene Holtze, 36 years; John Johnson, 27 years, Betty Jorgensen, 26 1\2 years and Denny Walhmeier, 20 years.

The five teachers combined for 150 years of service, 27,000 days and 220,000 hours, the Clarion reported.
