AMES, Iowa -- Charles "Chuck" LeRoy Murray, 69, of Boone, Iowa, died on Monday (April 19, 2004) at the Israel Family Hospice House in Ames, Iowa from complications of cancer.

He was born June 17, 1934, in Madrid, Iowa, to Carl & Mary Magdelina (Walker) Murray. He attended school in Madrid, Iowa.

On May 16, 1964, he married Geraldine Raye (Cross) at the Augustana Lutheran Church in Boone. He lived in Madrid, then moved to Des Moines, Iowa for 4 years, then moved to Boone in 1964.

After high school, he worked for Hallett Construction for one year pouring and laying blacktop. He then was a jack hammer operator for two years for Thompson's Construction out of Marshalltown working in central and southern Iowa. Then he worked for Minneapolis Paint Company out of Minneapolis, Minn. And then worked for Grimes Canning Factory at Grimes, Iowa. Then he worked for 25 years for Economy Forms in Des Moines building construction forms and welding the forms together. His last job was working at Iowa State University for 11 years as a welder in the steam tunnels and helped construct the towers at Iowa State University in Ames. He then retired Dec. 29, 1989.

He was a member of the Local 493 out of Des Moines with Economy Forms.

He is preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Jack, Robert and James; three sisters, Lena Dickerson, Vera Kelley and Ruth Goerner; daughter, Ruth Ann Gonzales; father-in-law, Kenneth Cross; three brothers-in-law, Harvey Dickerson, Don Kelley and Frank Goerner.

Survivors include his wife, Geraldine R. Murray of Boone; sons Kenny and wife, Carla Murray of McCook, Danny and wife, Karen Murray of Purdy, Mo.; daughters, Debbie and husband, Roger Ahrens of Huron, S.D., Michelle and husband, Kurt Bennett of Indianola, Pam Lakabung and her companion, Al Venenga of Gladbrook, Iowa; and six grandchildren

Services are Thursday, 10:30 a.m., at the First Evangelical Free Church of Boone with the Rev. Steve Gehman officiating

Visitation is today, at the Schroeder-Walter Funeral Home in Boone, 1-9 p.m., with family present to greet friends from 6:30-8:30 p.m. Visitation will continue Thursday at the church from 9 a.m. to the time of service at 10:30 a.m.

The body will be cremated and a private burial of the remains will be at a later date in the Linwood Park Cemetery of Boone.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the family.

The Schroeder-Walter Funeral Home of Boone is in charge of the arrangements.
