Donald Ray Cress, 71, died Wednesday (April 14, 2004) at his home in McCook.
He was born Oct. 16, 1932, to Clarence and Emma (Peter) Cress in Cheyenne County, Kan. He grew up in Cheyenne County and graduated from the Bird City High School in Bird City in 1950. On Dec. 8, 1950, he entered the Navy serving during the Korean Conflict. After his honorable discharge on Sept. 23, 1954, he returned to Cheyenne County.
On June 18, 1955, he married Rachel Frost in Goodland, Kan. The couple made their home in Wichita, Kan., before moving to Colorado Springs, Colo. In 1960, they moved to Bird City, where he was employed by the U.S. Postal Service. He became postmaster in 1972 and retired in 1986. The couple moved to McCook in 2003.
He was a member of the American Legion in Bird City.
He was preceded in death by one daughter, Melveta Van Artsdalen in 2000; four brothers, Charley, Bill, Denny and Jim Cress; and one sister, Loraine Amsberry.
Survivors include his wife, Rachel Cress of McCook; one daughter, Renita Peter of McCook; four sons, Vernon Cress and wife, Penny of Garden City, Kan., Rick Cress and wife, Wendy of Lexington, Gary Cress and wife, Pat of Topeka, Kan., and Kip Cress and wife, Tammy of Oscaloosa, Kan.; two brothers, Clarence Cress Jr. and wife, Jerry of Bird City and Lee Cress and wife, Lois of Bellflower, Calif., friend, Frances Hoyt; 25 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.
Services are Saturday, 10:30 a.m., at Herrmann Memorial Chapel in McCook with Pastor Terry Glasco officiating.
