Mary Jo Serbousek McCook High School senior Sunee Haney cleared 9 feet, 6 inches to finish first in the girls pole vault Friday at the McCook/North Platte track dual.

The McCook boys beat North Platte, while the Bison girls fell to the Bulldogs in track action Friday afternoon at the McCook High School track.

In team scoring, the McCook boys finished with 78 points to 63 for North Platte. On the girls' side, North Platte edged McCook, 73 to 62.

Carl Fritz, a McCook senior, again swept his events, taking first in both the boys' lung jump and triple jump with marks of 22 feet, 8 1/4 inches and 45' 1/2" respectively.

Fritz ranks third on the school's all-time list in the long jump and is also in the top 10 in the long jump.

Also bringing home two first-place finishes was Jeremy Young with a time of 44.1 seconds in the 300 meter hurdles and 15.6 seconds in the 110-high hurdles.

Other first-place finishers for McCook included Brendon Leiss in the 100-meter dash, Craig Fritz in the 400-meter dash, Derek Ruppert in the 200-meter dash and Trent Lyons in the pole vault.

Lyons became the sixth pole vaulter in school history to crack the 14 foot barrier. His effort tied him for third on the school's all-time list.

"Trent had an excellent attempt at 14-4, which would been a school record," Gumb said. "He barely brushed it off. If he can attain the mark, he will break the 24-year-old mark of 14-3, which is held by Trent's own vault coach and current Bison assistant Rick Haney."

The McCook A relay team won the 4x100 meter relay and the 4x400 meter relay.

"The strong winds really made the track meet an uncomfortable event for participants and spectators alike, but our athletes ssemed to handle the adverse conditions very well," said McCook boys track coach John Gumb.

"We had some outstanding performances in our dual victory over North Platte."

For the girls, Katherine Morell edged teammate Michelle Gaunt to win the 100-meter dash in 12.7 seconds. Morell also won the 200-meter dash in 27.2 seconds.

Other top finishers were Ashley Huffman in the discus, Michelle Gaunt in the long jump, Sunee Haney int he pole vault and Kayla Wilson in the shot put. McCook also won the 4x100 meter relay.

"I was really pleased with the efforts of our team," said McCook girls track coach Steve Clapp. "All of our girls on the track team (except for two) were able to participate in a number of events.

"The dual with North Platte gave us a chance to find out where everybody is at this time in regard to conditioning program. At this time, field events and the sprints seem to be a strong area. It will take time to bring along our athletes who are competing in other areas."

McCook will host the LeRoy Hoehner Invite at 10 a.m. Saturday.
