Bison girls tennis team opens season with victories over Hershey, Lexington

Wednesday, March 24, 2004

NORTH PLATTE -- The McCook High School girls tennis team opened the spring season Tuesday by posting victories over Hershey and Lexington at North Platte.

The Bison girls swept Hershey 9-0 and won 6-of-9 varsity matches against Lexington.

"The team got the season off to a great start by taking 22 of 24 matches overall (against Hershey)," said McCook tennis coach Matt Wiemers. "I'm pleased with how well the girls hustled and worked in each match.

"The team as a whole has shown great improvement and they played with a lot of determination. For our first matches of the season, I was impressed with the team's performance and the way they handled themselves on the court."

The Bison won 20-of-24 matches against Lexington.

"The team kept its momentum going into the Lexington dual with dominating fashion." Wiemers said.

"I was really surprised with how well the girls played with such perseverance. We have not competed well against Lexington the past three or four years. To come away with a dual win will be a big confidence builder and a great experience for the team."

The Bison compete at Hastings at 4 p.m. Monday.
