Lloyd H. Smith, 85, of Cambridge, died Monday (March 8, 2004) at Hillcrest Nursing Home in McCook.

He was born Feb. 9, 1919, to Mary Elizabeth (De Villers) and Christian Smith. His early childhood was spent on the family farm in Frontier County. He attended rural school until the eighth grade. He then helped his father on the farm.

On May 29, 1939, he married Edna Marie Allen in Oberlin. He farmed for many years. He purchased a Coast to Coast franchise and operated the hardware store in Arapahoe for 15 years. After selling the hardware store, Lloyd worked construction operating large earth moving equipment. He was also a skilled carpenter and operated a gas station and small grocery store. He was later employed as an electrical inspector.

In 1970, he was given an admiralship in the Great Navy of Nebraska by Gov. Norbert Tieman.

In 1974, he obtained his high school diploma. He moved to Hillcrest Nursing Home in Jan. 15, 2001.

He was preceded in death by his parents; an infant son, Lloyd Duane; infant daughter, Sharon Yvonne; and four brothers, Cecil, John, Glen and Eugene.

Survivors include his wife, Edna of Cambridge; one son, Wayne and wife, Beverly Smith of Waverly, Kan.; two grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Services are Friday, 2 p.m., at Trinity United Methodist Church in Cambridge. Interment will be in Memorial Park Cemetery in McCook.
