OBERLIN -- Janice Carman, 68, died Monday (March 1, 2004) at Decatur County Hospital in Oberlin.

She was born Oct. 13, 1935, to Ward K. and Ellanette (Gierhart) Claar in Oberlin. She was raised in Oberlin and attended school there. She graduated from Decatur Community High School.

On April 1, 1952, she married Max Carman at the Oberlin Methodist Church in Oberlin. The couple resided in Oberlin until 1956, when they moved to Goodland, Kan. In 1999, they moved back to Oberlin. She owned and operated a bookstore in Goodland.

She was a member of the United Methodist Church and Order of Eastern Star. She was a volunteers at FACES, Genesis and NW Kansas Animal Shelter.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

Survivors include her husband, Max of Oberlin; son, Mark and wife, Cathy Carman of McCook; two daughters, Tarnella Baker and husband, Roger of Port Balivar, Texas and Lynn Herbic and husband, Jim of Salina, Kan.; two sisters, Joyce Ploussard of Oberlin and Nancy Moore and husband, Riley of Norton; seven grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

Services are Friday, 10:30 a.m., at Pauls Funeral Home in Oberlin with the Rev. Doug Hasty officiating. Interment will be in Selden Cemetery in Selden.

Visitation is today until 8 p.m., and Friday, 8 a.m., until service time.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to the NW Kansas Animal Shelter.
