HAYS, Kan. -- Marilyn A. Carlson, 69, died Friday (Feb. 27, 2004) at her home in Hays, Kan.
She was born June 22, 1934, to L. Vernon and Mary (Macfee) Puelz near Danbury. She attended public schools through the eighth grade. She graduated from McCook High School in 1951. She then qualified for an elementary grade teaching certificate by attending McCook Junior College in McCook for two years.
On Aug. 15, 1954, she married Earl V. Carlson in McCook. She taught in Omaha while her husband finished his schooling at the University of Nebraska College of Medicine. The couple lived in several states as Earl finished his residency. They moved to Hays in 1965 where she completed her bachelors degree in elementary education and then received her masters degree in special education from Fort Hays State University. She taught school part time at the Anderson School of Hope in Victoria and then taught 24 years in the Hays Public Schools first in special education and later as a first grade teacher.
She was preceded in death by her father, Vernon Puelz.
Survivors include her husband, Earl of Hays; two sons, William of Lawrence, Kan., and Timothy of Phoenix, Ariz.; daughters, Susan Blackman and Cyd Schmidt, both of Topeka, Kan.; her mother, Mary Puelz of Victoria, Kan.; and nine grandchildren.
Services are Saturday at the First United Methodist Church in Hays.
Memorials can be given in her name to the First United Methodist Church or the Mary Elizabeth Maternity Home, both of Hays.
