Wallace girls squad moves on

IMPERIAL -- Wallace claimed the Class D2-10 sub-district Thursday night with a 56-38 win over fellow GPAC opponent Hayes Center.

Junior Amber Hochstetler set the pace of Wallace with 22 points including four 3-pointers.

Nicole Gier chipped in another 10 points to help her team advance to the district finals.

Senior Sara Richter closed out her basketball career at Hayes Center with a team-high 13 points, followed by 8 points from Terra Bishop.

Hayes Center finishes the season at 14-10. Wallace, 14-7, will play for the district championship and a chance at state.

CAMBRIDGE -- Elwood advanced out of sub-district play with a 51-47 win againt Eustis-Farnam on Thursday in Class D1-10 play.

After a slow start and trailing 24-9 at halftime, Eustis-Farnam started a comeback in the third.

Elwood held on for the win despite being outscored 27-10 in the final quarter.

Elwood's Morgan Baldonado had a game-high 24 points.

Fellow starters Megan Baldonado and Sydney Cooksley each chipped in 8 points.

Lisa Fagot led Eustis-Farnam with 14 points, closely followed by Christina Schroeder with 13 points.

Schroeder had high rebounding honors with 8 at the boards.

HaLea Messersmith finished with 5 assists, while Chelsea Wolf and Fagot each pulled down 6 rebounds.

Elwood went to the free-throw line 28 times, making 15 of those shots. The Knights were 5 of 8.

Elwood improves to 17-5, while Eustis-Farnam finishes the season at 15-6.

OBERLIN -- Abby Ream and Kelsey Dorshorst combined for 46 points to lead Oberlin over Oakley, Kan., 68-55, during senior night Thursday for the Red Devils.

Ream and Kelsey both scored 23 points, as Dorshorst rounded out a double-double with 12 rebounds.

Teammate Jamie Elwood added another 14 points in the win.

Oakley finished with two players in double figures.

Oberlin hit 13 of 17 freethrows, while Oakley was 8 of 14.

"To win on senior night is real special for these girls and to beat a good team like Oakley is even better," said Oberlin coach Paul Nepodal.

"We played real well as a team and our seniors led the way."

The girls return to the floor Tuesday at 6 p.m. at Phillipsburg, Kan.

OBERLIN -- Oberlin dropped a 59-48 game to Oakley, Kan., Thursday night with the key problem in the turnovers.

The Red Devils turned the ball over 20 times to 5 for Oakley.

"Oakley took care of the ball and we did not," said Oberlin coach Dick Ahlbeg.

Lance Fortin led the Red Devils with 18 points.

Egan Grafel finished with a double-double in the loss on 16 points and 10 rebounds.

Two Oakley players reached double digits.

Oberlin outrebounded Oakley 28-23.

Oberlin falls to 11-8, while Oakley is 13-6.
