G.E. Turnquist

GOTHENBURG -- G.E. Turnquist, 81, died Thursday (Feb. 12, 2004, at the Gothenburg Memorial Hospital in Gothenburg.

He was born March 22, 1922, to Godfrey E. and Edith L. (Johnson) Turnquist north of Gothenburg on the family homestead. He graduated from Gothenburg High School in 1940.

On Oct. 26, 1973, he married Gretchen Pickering at the Little Brown Church in the Vale in Nashua, Iowa. He was farmer and was involved in soil conservation.

He served as president of the National Land Improvement and Conservation Association from 1969 to 1970. He was sexton of the New Hope Cemetery for many years.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his wife, Gretchen on Sept. 5, 1998.

Survivors include one daughter, Judea and husband, Mike Loible of Culbertson; one son, Devy and wife, Cindi Pickering of Ogallala; two brothers, Max and wife, Sue Turnquist of Gothenburg and Don and wife, Kathy Turnquist of Hutchinson; one sister, Ellen Dennis of Arnold; six grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.

Services are Monday, 10:30 a.m., at Blase Memorial Chapel in Gothenburg with the Revs. Larry Viter and Robert Litzenberger officiating. Interment is at the New Hope Cemetery north of Gothenburg.

Visitation is Saturday, 9 a.m.-5 p.m., and Sunday, 1-9 p.m.

Memorials may be given in his name to New Hope Cemetery or the Gothenburg Rescue Unit.
