MAYWOOD -- Josephine Schmelzer, 91, died Wednesday (Feb. 4, 2004) at her home in rural Maywood.
She was born June 5, 1912, to John Henry and Wilhelmenia Dorothea Henerika Emma (Duhrkopf) Schmelzer in Hayes County near White. She attended school at District No. 50 and was a 1930 graduate of the Nebraska School of Agriculture in Curtis. She began teaching in rural school in the in fall of 1930. She then taught at Hayes Center Public School and Curtis Public School, retiring in 1972. She earned her bachelor of arts degree and almost enough credits for a master's degree by attending summer classes, off-campus classes and correspondence classes.
She was a life-long member of the Lutheran faith. She was confirmed in St. John's Lutheran Church in Hayes County and later joined Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church of McCook.
She was preceded in death by her father in 1952; her mother in 1957; brothers, Albert in 1966 and Carl in 1971; and sisters, Johanna Marie in 1911 and Louise in 1981.
Survivors include many cousins and friends.
Services are Saturday, 2 p.m., at St. John's (White) Lutheran Church, east of Hayes Center, with the Rev. Steven Neyhert officiating. Interment is in the St. John's (White) cemetery.
Visitation is Friday, 9 a.m.-9 p.m., at Blase Wetzel Funeral Home in Curtis.
Memorials may be given in her name to Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church in McCook or to donors' choice.
