I'm right there with them. Of course, the snowblower is sitting there in the shed, rarin' to charge the driveway. It was all I could do to leave ol' red parked during this weekend's dusting, and use the noisy aluminum shovel to clear what little snow got in the way.
A co-worker was talking to his brother in Lincoln over the weekend, saying they had a foot of snow on the ground, and another on the way.
Apparently, they got it, in the east end of the state, anyway. According to the National Weather Service, 11.3 inches of snow in Omaha, for a total of 21 inches‚ a record for the month of February.
With more snow on the way, Omaha has a chance to pass the all-time record of 27 inches which fell in March 1960.
With the current storm expected for our area, I noticed you need to be selective which forecast you heed. Checking the local television station, coming out of southern Kansas, you wouldn't think we would receive much snow.
Our local forecast, however, calls for 3-5 inches of snow possible tonight, another 3-5 Wednesday, 60 percent chance of snow Thursday and 30 percent Thursday night.
I hope I didn't jinx it by mentioning the snowblower.
The old record for Omaha snow depth in February was 18 inches, set in 1965.
Remember the blizzard of 1965? We tried driving our old blue-and-white Dodge on a side road home, because we were afraid of the drifting on Highway 30.
Actually, the side road we chose was probably the route of the old Lincoln Highway.
As it turned out, it wasn't a good choice. We spent a few days staying with the neighbors, and the old Dodge sat in a snow drift for a while before we could dig it out.
I don't remember anybody praying for snow in those days. There were cows to milk, steers to feed, and not a snowblower in sight. Dad did have a Farmhand with a big red bucket that could move a lot of snow, however.
We spent time with the neighbors because of the South Platte River flooded that same year, but I can't recall which was first: the flood of 1965 or the blizzard of 1965.
Could El Niño have been involved?
If it does snow, I hope the streets are still open enough to make it to the YMCA.
No, I didn't make a New Year's resolution to exercise. I just decided that, since I am paying for a membership, I may as well put it to use.
I don't have any particular goals beyond that, other than feeling better because of exercise.
Until yesterday, the bathroom scale had a dead battery. After I tried it out, I decided maybe I should have some goals.
When my arm hurt the other morning, I though perhaps I had simply slept on it wrong.
Later, while I was handing a one-pound camera across the desk to a co-worker, I remembered doing curls in the weight room.
Seriously, though, if you feel cabin fever coming on, get some exercise -- whether it's at the Y, the auditorium or outside. Outside is best, if you have a chance to soak in some sunshine.
-- When Bruce Crosby has the urge to exercise, he usually lays down until it goes away.
