ENGLEWOOD, Colo. -- Charles W. Leibbrandt, 80, of Atwood, died Wednesday (Jan. 21, 2004) at Swedish Medical Center in Engelwood, Colo.

He was born July 29, 1923, to Jacob E. and Edna (Zimmerle) Leibbrandt in St. Francis. He was raised on a farm northwest of St. Francis and attended grade school in St. Francis. He graduated from St. Francis High School in 1941. He attended business college in Grand Island. After graduation he accepted a civil service position at the Pentagon in Washington, D.C. for 18 months. In 1943, he moved Atwood where he began his farming career, helping his uncle Leonard Paulson. He also worked at Bellamy's Drug Store.

On Aug. 6, 1955, he married Berna Lee Finan at St. Columkille's Church in Blaine, Kan.

He was a member of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church, the Knights of Columbus No. 2022 of Atwood, the Knights of Columbus fourth degree St. Pius X Assembly, also of Atwood, and the Aces and Eights Social Club.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and sister, Arlis Guinn.

Survivors include his wife, Berna of Atwood; his children, Doug and wife, Lorri of Prairie Village, Kan., Bregette Ginther of Colorado Springs, Colo., Gina Chvatal and husband, Scott of Atwood, Kan., Deborah Wehner and husband, Ron of Rogersville, Mo., Kim Zollinger and husband, Bryan of Price, Utah and Greg and wife, Karen of Atwood; sister, Naomi Renz of Lakewood, Colo.; brother, Ben and wife, Pat of St. Francis; nine grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; and one step-great-grandchild.

A Mass of Christian burial is Monday, 10:30 a.m., at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Atwood with the Rev. Damian Richards officiating. Interment will be in Mount Calvary Cemetery in Atwood.

A parish vigil and Knights of Columbus rosary is Sunday, 7 p.m., at William Funeral Home in Atwood.

Visitation is Saturday and Sunday, 9 a.m.-9 p.m. at the funeral home.

A memorial has been established in his name to the Rawlins County Health Center or the Atwood Swimming Pool Project and may be left at the funeral home.
