ATWOOD -- Raymond Leonard Vrbas, 76, of Hays, Kan., died Wednesday (Dec. 17, 2003) at the Good Samaritan Center in Atwood.
He was born Sept. 9, 1927, to Frank J. and Mary M. (Bartosovsky) Vrbas in Stratton. He attended country school at Forest Hill Grade School northwest of Atwood.
On May 13, 1961, he married Carolyn Andrijeski at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Stratton. During his working years he was a farmer and stockman. He was an area resident for 62 years before moving to Hays, Kan., in 1990.
He was a member of the Knights of Columbus No. 3033, Catholic Workman No. 74 and Knights of Columbus St. Pius X Assembly, all of Atwood. He was active in the Rawlins County Farm Bureau and served on the board of directors and on committee positions on the county and Northwest Kansas Farm Bureau district levels from 1962 to 1990.
He was preceded in death by his parents; three sisters, Helen Horinek, Alice Horinek and Gertrude Havel; and three brothers, Frank, William and Bernard.
Survivors include his wife, Carolyn of Hays; two sons, Mark and wife, Jeanne Vrbas of Atwood, Richard "Rick" and Sandy Vrbas of Ottawa, Kan.; one daughter, Roberta "Robbi" and Art Sprouse of Abeline, Kan.; one brother, Charles Vrbas of Palisade; five sisters, Antoinette Horinek of Atwood, Marian Ruda of Atwood, Adella Harry of Colby, Kan., Martha Souchek of Arvada, Colo., and Frances Ham of Brighton, Colo.; and seven grandchildren.
Mass of Christian burial is Saturday, 10:30 a.m., at St. John Nepomucene Catholic Church in rural Atwood with the Rev. Damian Richards officiating. Interment is in St. John's Cemetery.
A parish vigil and Knights of Columbus rosary is Friday, 7 p.m., at Williams Funeral Home in Atwood.
A memorial has been established in his name at Hope Lodge at Quality Hill Center, Heartland Division, Inc., 1120 Pennsylvania Avenue, Kansas City, MO 6415 or may be left at the funeral home.
