Lyons, Noyes top All-Area teams

Better late than never.

After several delays due to late football playoffs, holidays and the winter sports publication, the McCook Daily Gazette sports department has released its Gazetteland All-Area Football and Volleyball Teams -- the Football Super 30 and the Volleyball Super Baker's Dozen (13).

Headlining the Gazetteland picks are the Players of the Year.

Noyes

The Gazetteland Football Player of the Year is McCook High School senior Trent Lyons.

The Volleyball Player of the Year is Republican Valley High School junior Savannah Noyes.

Selecting two All-Area Teams is difficult because of the success since 12 of the 25 schools (19 in Nebraska and six in Kansas) in the Gazette coverage area were involved in postseason.

We crowned two state champions in football in McCook (Nebraska Class B) and Cambridge (Nebraska Class C2) and two runnersup in Chase County-Imperial (Nebraska Class C1) and Herndon (Kansas/Nebraska Six-Man).

Eustis-Farnam lost in the semifinals of the Class D1 state playoffs.

Two area teams reached the Nebraska state volleyball state tournament.

Republican Valley fell short in its bid for a sixth straight state title and claimed runnerup honors in Class D1.

Cambridge advanced to state for the second straight season and lost in the first round of the Class C2 tournament.

Lyons, who has kicked a state-record 30 field goals and has exceled as a punter, quarterback and free safety, is the all-time leading defensive point-getter for Bison football.

In addition to the Gazette honors, Lyons was recognized by the Omaha World Herald, Associated Press, Lincoln Journal-Star and Huskerland Prep.

Lyons, 6-foot, 155 pounds, was also a first-team pick on the Greater Nebraska Athletic Conference and Class B-5 District Teams.

Noyes, a 6-2 middle blocker/hitter, finished the 2003 season with more than 300 kills and 62 ace blocks.

Noyes was named to the Omaha World-Herald All-Nebraska Third Team and was first team in Class D1. She also received all-Republican Vallet League first team honors.
