Bertha L. Hood, 90, died Saturday (Dec. 6, 2003) at Community Hospital of McCook.
She was born July 7, 1913, to Robert Franklin and Maude Emma (Snook) Weldon in Pueblo, Colo. She graduated from Pueblo High School/College Prep Section in 1931. She attended Tarkio College in Missouri and graduated in 1936.
On Aug. 7, 1937, she married LeRoy W. Hood in Tarkio. The couple moved to Frontier County where they began careers as educators. They moved to the Palisade community in the mid 40s and then to McCook in 1967. She taught school for 24 years, including the Palisade and Culbertson schools. She served principal in Ingham. In 1994, she moved to Willow Ridge Retirement Community and was residing there at the time of her death.
She was a member of the Memorial United Methodist Church and the United Methodist Women, Nebraska Education Association, Delta Kappa Gamma Sorority, Order of Eastern Star serving as Worthy Matron, Shrine Ladies Auxiliary and PEO Chapter FA.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, LeRoy in 1996; her daughter, Welda Brown in 1993; her foster parents, Wallace and Jenn White Cunningham; foster mother, Elizabeth White; and 12 brothers and sisters.
Survivors include her daughter, Janyce and husband, Virgil McClatchey of Palisade; three sons, Wallace Hood and wife, Janet of Normal, Ill., John Hood and wife, Lesta of Edmond, Okla., and Thomas Hood and wife, Connie of Hallam; 14 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.
Services are Wednesday, 10 a.m., at Memorial United Methodist Church with the Rev. Dr. Jeff Thurman officiating. Interment will be at the Palisade Cemetery.
Visitation is today, 9 a.m.-8 p.m., at Carpenter Breland Funeral Home.
