He was born April 10, 1943, to Marion Adolph and Theresa Margaret (Fidnarik) Schmidt in Cambridge. He graduated from McCook High School in 1961.
He was the production manager at the McCook Daily Gazette and employee for 47 years..
Starting as a carrier captain at the age of 13, he was involved in all aspects of the newspaper, from planning production schedules to ordering newsprint, preparing press runs, operating the presses, repairing equipment -- to recycling waste newsprint and clearing the sidewalks of snow.
He was widely traveled, visiting every continent except Australia.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Survivors include a son, Michael Schmidt of Colorado and a brother Dean Schmidt and wife, Bernadette of Lakewood, Colo.
Memorials services are Wednesday, 5 p.m. at the Carpenter Breland Chapel with Jerry Beckenhauer officiating.
Inurnment will be in Memorial Park Cemetery at a later time.
