BENKELMAN -- Arlene Ida Spears, 87, died Nov. 6, 2003, at Dundy County Hospital in Benkelman.
She was born June 6, 1916, on the family farm near Parks to Reverda and Lois (Hardwick) Baney. She attended country school near her home and graduated from Benkelman High School in 1934.
She taught country school for one year and then attended Chadron Teachers College in 1935. She returned to Benkelman and continued to teach for several years.
On March 17, 1940, she married Melvin "Doc" Spears. they moved to a farm south of Benkelman in Cheyenne County, Kan. They later bought a farm west of Benkelmen, moving to their home in Benkelman in 1976 and retiring from farming in 1978.
She was a member of the United Presbyterian Church in Benkelman and active in the Presbyterian Women's Association. She also was a 50-year member of the Doane Extension Club.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; and two brothers, Lawrence and Johnny.
Survivors include two daughters, Beverly and husband, Larry Cast of Grand Island and Cheryl Wall of Denver, Colo.; one sister, Verle Behlke of Benkelman; three brothers, Manley and wife, Barbara Baney, Waldo Baney and Gerald Baney, all of Benkelman; five granchildren; and two great-grandsons.
Services were Nov. 10 at the United Presbyterian Church in Benkelman. Burial was at the Benkelman Cemetery.
Memorials are being accepted in her name.
Forch Funeral Chapel of Benkelman was in charge of arrangements.
