Herndon rips Santee to close out regular season

HERNDON -- The Herndon Beavers finished out the regular season Friday with a 67-36 win over Santee.

Herndon finished second in the Nebraska conference at 7-1 and 8-1 overall.

During Friday's game, the Beavers had 227 yards rushing and another 338 in the air.

Ben Grafel led with 15 carries for 210 yards and three touchdowns.

Rodney Rippe completed 14-of 25 passes for 311 yards and six TDs.

Four Beavers were on the receiving end, led by Grafel's five receptions for 117 yards and another three TDs.

Dan Riener had an addtional five receptions for 105 yards and one score.

Both Marintzer and Basgall had catches for scores as well.

Defensively, the Beavers forced four turnovers while not putting the ball on the ground once.

Abe Marintzer and Ben Grafel each had one interception, while Grafel and Brown each picked up a fumble.

Riener led the defense with 17 tackles, nine of those solo.

Marintzer was the other Beaver to finish with double-digit tackles at 11.

Six-man playoffs begin Thursday with second-seed Herndon hosting third-seed Arthur (6-3) at 6 p.m. in one semifinal game.

The other semifinal playoff game matches top-seed Wheeler County (8-0) and fourth-seed Arcadia (5-3) at Bartlett.

The finals are Nov. 13.
