Helm, Downer wedding

INDIANOLA -- Maria Yanis Helm and Derek Stephen Downer were united in marriage July 19, 2003, at St. Catherine's Catholic Church in Indianola with the Rev. Nicholas Baker officiating.

Parents of the couple are James and Yanis Helm of Danbury and Stephen and Patricia Downer of Bartley.

Grandparents of the couple are John and Helen Helm of Norcatur, Efreen B. Rojas of David, Panama and the late Rosa Santiago de Rojas, Maxine Downer of Bartley and the late Kenneth Downer, Alice Rummel of Huntington Beach, Calif., and the late Julian Rummel.

The bride wore a sleeveless satin A-line gown with alacron lace, hand-sewn pearls and authentic crystals. The detachable cathedral-length train was decorated with a bow, sequins and pearls. She wore a rhinestone tiara and a tulle veil what was sprinkled with pearls. She carried a bouquet of yellow long-stemmed roses, baby's breath and stephanotis. The bridegroom wore a black tuxedo with a white vest and white bow tie.

Danette Sughroue of Bartley was the maid of honor. The bridesmaids were Helena Helm of Danbury, sister of the bride, Jenny Rose Delaney of Glenwood, La., cousin of the bride, and Sarah Jolly of Lebanon. They each wore a yellow, floor-length satin dress with pearls. They carried bouquets of long-stemmed yellow roses with silver satin ribbon.

Ceanne Rinehart of Colby, Kan., aunt of the bride, served as the bride's personal attendant.

Todd Downer of Bartley, brother of the bridegroom, was the best man. The bridegroomsmen were Ben King of Hastings, Joey Ottley of Hastings and Brandon Sughroue of Indianola. The bridegroomsmen wore black tuxedos with blue vests and blue bow ties.

The flower girls were Karlie Swink of Bartley, niece of the bridegroom, and Carolyn Rose Cook of Denver, cousin of the bride. They wore dresses similar to the dresses worn by the bridesmaids. Maurice Redbear of Danbury, foster brother of the bride, served as the ring bearer. Brandon Redbear of Danbury, foster brother of the bride, served as the honorary ring bearer.

Ushers for the ceremony were Jaime Helm of Danbury, brother of the bride, and Brian Perks of Bartley.

The candlelighters and altar servers for the ceremony were Aaron Helm and Jacob Helm of Norcatur. The lector was Raymond Haag of Bartley. The acolyte was Steve McConville of Bartley. Debbie Dolan of Indianola was the organist. Sam Stritt of Bartley was the vocalist.

The reception was at the Cambridge Community Building in Cambridge. Host couples were Steve and Sue Ervin of Cambridge and Martin and Ceanne Rinehart of Colby. Melissa Critchfield of Bartley served as the guest book attendant. Betty Johnson of Cambridge served as wedding coordinator. Jackie Delaney of Glenwood, Iowa, Holly Mollhoff of Cambridge, Suzi Rummel of Encinitas, Calif., and Debra Helm of Norcatur were cake servers. Mary Delaney of Glenwood served as gift attendant. Emily Shuck of Hastings and Hope Downer of Mason City were the bubble attendants. The cake was created by Holly Mollhoff of Cambridge.

The couple honeymooned on a cruise to Key West and Cozumel.

The bride is attending Hastings College with plans to graduate with a baccalaureate degree in biology. The bridegroom is also attending Hastings College with plans to graduate with a baccalaureate degree in business administration and economics.

The couple is making their home in Hastings.
