WAMEGO, Kan. -- John Richard Lawless, 74, died Tuesday (Sept. 2, 2003) at Wamego City Hospital after a lengthy illness. He was born March 1, 1929, to John Arthur and Bessie (Brown) Lawless in Palisade. He attended schools in Palisade.
He was a Navy veteran.
On Aug. 29, 1959, he married Elizabeth "Betty" O'Connor in Lexington. He earned his bachelor's degree at the University of Nebraska in 1958 and his master's degree from Washington State University in 1960. He was a crop research scientist and spent his career with Kansas State University at the Colby, Kan., Branch Experiment Station. He retired in 1994 with 34 years of services. He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Joanne Mucklow; and a grandson, Aaron Hemphill.
Survivors include his wife, Betty of Wamego; two sons, Tom Lawless and wife, Mary of Phoenix, Ariz., and John "Jack" Lawless and wife, Sandy of Imperial; one daughter, Suzanne Hemphill and husband, Troy of Wamego; one brother, Bill Lawless and wife, Martha of Palisade; four sisters, Betty Potthoff and husband, Frank of Palisade, Eileen Long and husband, George of Englewood, Colo., Connie Hovorka of Lincoln and Doris Phillips of Sedona, Ariz.; one brother-in-law, Chet Mucklow of Hollywood, Fla.; and nine grandchildren.
