ATWOOD -- Arnold "Barney" L. Okeson, 81, died Thursday (Sept. 6, 2001) at the Rawlins County Health Center in Atwood.
He was born March 4, 1920, at Chance, Kan., to Olof and Karin Cecelia (Johnson) Okeson. He spent most of his life in Wallace County, Kan., until moving to Atwood on Jan. 5, 2000.
He served in the U.S. Army 989th Engineer Treadway Bridge Company from March of 1942 to Dec. of 1945, during World War II
On Dec. 28, 1953, he married Dorothy Jeanne Newman at the former Stockholm Bethany Lutheran Church, now in Weskan, Kan. He owned and operated Barney's Vickers in Weskan for more than 52 years. He was a life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post Jerome Dechant No. 6844 of Sharon Springs, Kan., and the Sherman Wallace Association for Retarded Children.
He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Ralph, Emery and Hilmer; one sister, Vivian Cox; and two sisters-in-law, Mildred Okeson and Evelyn Okeson.
Survivors include his wife, Dorothy of Atwood; one son, Michael Okeson of Atwood; one brother, Kenneth A. Okeson of Weskan; one sister-in-law, Fay Okeson of Montrose, Colo.; one brother-in-law, Bill Cox of Lander, Wyo.; and nieces and nephews.
Graveside services will be Saturday, 10 a.m., MDT, at the Stockholm Cemetery in Weskan with the Rev. Don White officiating. Interment will be at the Stockholm Cemetery. Military rites will be provided by the VFW Post Jerome Dechant No. 6844 of Sharon Springs.
Visitation is today until 9 p.m. at Williams Funeral Home of Atwood.
Memorials may be given in his name to the Kansas Special Olympics, and left at the funeral home.
