C. Roland Brown
BEAVER CITY -- C. Roland Brown, 86, of Mapelton, Iowa, formerly of Hendley and Wilsonville, died Monday (Sept. 24, 2001) at Sioux City, Iowa.
He was born May 26, 1915, at Beaver City to Delbert and Anna M. (Straube) Brown. He attended Middle Rockton County School, and graduated from Hendley High School in 1931. He graduated from Kearney State Teacher's College in 1936. He taught at Hendley High School from 1936 to 1937, and was a teacher and principal at Wilsonville High School from 1937 to 1940.
On July 6, 1939, he married LaVonne Query. They moved to Orleans were he was superintendent of schools until 1947. They moved from Orleans to North Bend where he served as school superintendent for 12 years. They then moved to Mapleton where he was school superintendent from 1959 until his retirement in 1980. They remained in Mapleton following retirement.
He was a member of the St. John's Methodist Church, Library Board and the Mapleton Electric Board, all in Mapleton. He served three years on the Nebraska High School Activities Association Board. He also served 17 years on the Iowa High School Speech Association Board, and was elected into the Hall of Fame in this organization.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and his son, Tommy Lee in 1959.
Survivors include his wife, LaVonne of Mapleton; one son, Lonnie and wife, Bev of Decorah, Iowa; two brothers, Dean and wife, Margaret of Wilsonville, and Darrel and wife, Eula of Beaver City; two grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
Services will be Thursday in Iowa, with local services Friday, 10:30 a.m., at Wenburg Funeral Home in Beaver City with the Rev. Theda Dame officiating. Interment will follow at the Hendley Cemetery.
Visitation will be Friday, 8 a.m. until the time of the service at the funeral home.
