Dennis Brooks Schnell
NORTH PLATTE -- Dennis Brooks Schnell, 81, died Tuesday (Oct. 9, 2001) at Great Plains Regional Medical Center in North Platte after a lengthy illness.
He was born Feb. 7, 1920, on the family farm near Harvard to Conrad and Mary Margaret (Schlitt) Schnell. The family moved to a farm near Goodland, Kan., when he was three years old. He graduated from Goodland High School in 1938. He worked several jobs during high school, including planting and harvesting crops. After graduation, he went to work for Taylor's Grocery in Goodland.
On Aug. 20, 1939, he married Nina Gail Day at her parents' sod home near Ruleton, Kan. He attended school in Wichita, Kan., to learn to design and build airplanes. He was employed by Boeing Aircraft as a pattern maker.
In 1945 the family moved to a farm in Colorado, and one year later, moved to McCook. He started a partnership pouring cement, and began building houses to sell.
He built the Silver Leaf Motel in Culbertson, which he and his wife ran for seven years. They then traded the motel for a farm near Seibert, Colo. They then returned to Kansas and he was again employed by Boeing. The family moved back to Colorado where in addition to farming, he owned and operated a terracing business. He also operated a small dairy, building a small herd.
The family moved to Wellfleet, where he was active in the Wellfleet Methodist Church, and was instrumental in establishing Medicine Valley High School in Curtis. He and his wife moved to North Platte, and where he took classes and became a real estate salesman. After retiring, they moved to a home a Jeffery Lake near Brady, and joined the Banner Methodist Church. They lived there for 10 years, before returning to North Platte in 1993.
Survivors include his wife, Nina of North Platte; four children, Larry Schnell and wife, Marilyn of North Platte, Linda Strohfus of Brandon, Fla., Cheryl Ruder of Ventura, Calif., and Gary Schnell of Tempe, Ariz.; 11 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
Services will be Friday, 2 p.m., at the Calvary Baptist Church in North Platte with the Rev. Robert Payne officiating. Interment will be at the Gothenburg Cemetery. Visitation is today until 9 p.m. at Carpenter Memorial Chapel in North Platte.
Memorials may be given in his name to the Calvary Baptist Church in North Platte.
