Julia Alberta (Lawrence) Winkler
CURTIS -- Julia Alberta (Lawrence) Winkler, 86, died Thursday (Oct. 11, 2001) at Senior Living Choices in Curtis.
She was born May 25, 1915, at Deming, N.M., to Emmor and Pearl (Wilsey) Lawrence. She grew up on a farm west of Moorefield, went to college in Kearney and earned her degree in education.
She first taught in a district south of the family farm, using a horse as her means of transportation. Following her mother's death in 1939 she lived with her sister, Marie Sears in Curtis while teaching in the Dold District south of Maywood.
On July 27, 1942, she married Calvert Winkler. They moved to Horsecreek, Wyo., near her father's residence. She taught school there until the couple moved to San Leandro, Calif., where she taught at the same school for 32 years until retiring.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; sister Martha Barrett and Marie Sears; and two brothers, William Lawrence and Fay Lawrence, in infancy.
Survivors include three nieces, Yvonne Cole of Curtis, Roberta Tangen of Redmond, Wash., and Frances Matlock of Billings, Mont.; one nephew, Wilsey Barrett of Powell, Wyo.; and one great-nephew, Roy Cole of Curtis.
Graveside services will be Monday, 2 p.m., at the Moorefield Cemetery in Moorefield with the Rev. Allen Hodges officiating.
There is no visitation.
Memorials may be made to the Cancer Society or the agency of the donor's choice.
