Robert P. Young
ELWOOD -- Robert P. Young, 91, died Tuesday (Oct. 16, 2001) at the Elwood Care Center in Elwood.
He was born July 26, 1910, on a farm southeast of Culbertson to Francis Paul and Dora Anne (Leffler) Young. He graduated from Hayes County High School in 1928, and attended the University of Nebraska for one year.
On Sept. 7, 1935, he married Velda K. May at McCook. They lived in Southwest Nebraska until 1941, he began working for the FAA at Phillip, S.D. They returned to Hayes Center one year later where he was stationed until 1950 when the facilities were moved to Imperial. He became chief of the Imperial Station in 1959. He retired in 1970 after 29 years of service. In 1999, he moved to the Elwood Care Center where he spent the rest of his life.
He was a past president of the Imperial Rotary Club, and a member of both the Palisade and the Imperial Masonic Lodges. He was awarded the Jordan Medal for his membership of more than 50 years in October 1994 by the Palisade Lodge. He was also a supporter of the United Methodist Church.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Velda; one son, Dirk; one daughter, Cheryl; two brothers, Clifford and Clarence; and one sister, Ramona Low.
Survivors include one daughter, Diann McClatchey and husband, David of Eustis; one son-in-law, Richard Rassfeld of Holiday Island, Ark.; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Graveside services will be Saturday, 9 a.m. MDT, at the Palisade Cemetery in Palisade. Memorial services will follow at 11:30 a.m. MDT at the United Methodist Church of Imperial with the Rev. Murray Schmechel officiating.
Visitation will be Friday, 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. MDT, at Liewer Funeral Home of Imperial.
Memorials may be given in his name to the United Methodist Church of Imperial, or the Elwood Care Center of Elwood. Liewer Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
