TRENTON -- Lester C. Powers, 83, of Trenton, died Friday (Oct. 26, 2001) at Community Hospital of McCook.

He was born Aug. 5, 1918, at Trenton to Charles Franklin and Anna Catherine (Morgan) Powers. He grew up at Trenton, and graduated from Trenton High School in 1936.

On April 1, 1942, he entered the U.S. Army, serving in the European Theater with he 90th Division, 357th Infantry, during World War II.

On Feb. 3, 1944, he married Dorothy Irene Goodwin of McCook at Fort Dix, N.J.. Following his discharge from the military on Oct. 29, 1945, they moved to Trenton where he was elevator manager for Krotter and Wellett. In 1964 they purchased the Trenton Register. A year later they purchased the Culbertson Progress and combined the two papers into the Hitchcock County News. He retired in 1978.

He was a life long member of St. James Catholic Church, the American Legion, and Veterans of Foreign Wars in Trenton.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one daughter-in-law, Peggy Davis Powers; one brother, Elmer Powers; and three sisters, Irene Robarchek, Bertha Watson and Edith Frank Faimon.

Survivors include his wife, Dorothy of Trenton; two sons, Charles Powers and wife, Patricia of McCook, and Edward Powers and wife, Beverly of Trenton; three daughters, Carol Barraza and husband, Daniel of Denver, Colo., Janet Aramayo of Trenton, and Joyce Tunink and husband, Doug of Randolph; nine grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Mass of Christian Burial services will be Tuesday, 10:30 a.m., at St. James Catholic Church in Trenton. Interment with military honors will be at St. James Cemetery in Trenton. The rosary service will be tonight, 7:30 p.m., at St. James Catholic Church.

Memorials may be given in his name, and friends may call at Herrmann Funeral Chapel of Trenton.
