Charlie H. Clary, 95, died Monday (Oct. 29, 2001) at Hillcrest Nursing Home in McCook.

He was born Oct. 2, 1906, at Orleans to John William and Emma Jane (Thurston) Clary. He started work at the age of 13 in a sugar factory at Bayrd where he worked for 13 years. He attended school through the eighth grade when he quit school to help his parents.

He helped build the railroad station in McCook, worked on a farm for four years, and then worked for the Monument Station for one year. In 1937 he worked at the McCook Hotel as a cook. In 1938 he started his own trucking business which hauled furniture, rolls of paper for the McCook Daily Gazette, and cattle. He did this until 1976 when he went to work for the West Sale Barn where he worked for five years. On Aug. 14, 1928, he married Martha Clamp. They lived all of their married lives in McCook. She preceded him in death on Aug. 8, 1969. In 1979 he moved to Greeley, Colo.

On July 22, 1980, he married Effie Lammers at Greeley. He lived in Greeley until Jan. 4, 2000, when he returned to McCook.

He was a lifelong member of Memorial United Methodist Church.

He was preceded in death by his parents; both wives; one daughter, Doris at birth; six sisters, Daisy, Etta, Goldie, Mineria, Annie, and Effie; two brothers, Bert and Orvil; one step-brother, James; and one granddaughter, Kimberly.

Survivors include his children, Alice Marks and husband, Alton of Culbertson, Betty Sprenkle and husband, Bill of Phoenix, Ariz., Viola McBride of Colorado Springs, Colo., George Clary and wife, Diane of Coal Valley, Ill., and Delbert Clary and wife, Lillie of Englewood, Colo.; one sister-in-law, Edith Clary of McCook; 29 grandchildren; three step-grandchildren; 31 great-grandchildren; two step-great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren.

Services will be Friday, 10:30 a.m., at Memorial United Methodist Church with the Rev. Dr. Jeffery Thurman officiating. Interment will be at Riverview Cemetery.

Visitation is today until 5 p.m., and Thursday, 9 a.m. to 8 p.m., at Carpenter Breland Funeral Home of McCook.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given in his name.
