George Henry Beims

ATWOOD -- George Henry Beims, 76, died Wednesday (Nov. 7, 2001) at the Decatur County Good Samaritan Center in Oberlin.

He was born April 20, 1925, at Ludell, Kan., to Henry William and Rose Ethel (Burst) Beims. He attended grade school in Ludell and Atwood, and Atwood High School.

He was inducted into the U.S. Navy during the Korean Conflict in 1950. He was honorably discharged in 1952.

He returned to Atwood and worked at various jobs until 1957 when he was hired as Chief of Police by the City of Atwood. He remained at his job for 37 years, retiring in December 1993.

On June 14, 1968, he married Erma Chvatal Sawer.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Ramie Beims and Virgil Beims; and one step-son, James W. Sawer.

Survivors include his wife, Erma of Atwood; two step-daughters, Julie Britton of Lincoln, Kan., and Carol Brown and husband, Steve of Buckner, Mo.; one sister, Grace Davis and husband, Ralph of Santa Monica, Calif.; and four grandchildren.

Services will be Saturday, 2 p.m., at the United Methodist Church in Atwood with the Rev. Wayne Stephens officiating. Interment will be at the Atwood Fairview Cemetery. Military rites will be provided by the American Legion Sam Hubbard Post No. 46 of Atwood. Honor Guard and Police Escort will be provided by the Atwood Police Department and the Rawlins County Sheriff's Department.

Visitation is tonight until 7:30 p.m., and Saturday, 9 to 11:30 a.m. at Williams Chapel in Atwood.

Memorials may be given in his name to the Rawlins County Cancer Unit or the George H. Beims Memorial Fund to be designated to the new Atwood swimming pool fund.
