FRANKLIN -- William "Bill" Nielsen, 77, died Saturday (March 23, 2002) in a motor vehicle accident north of Franklin.
He was born on Aug. 25, 1924 to James F. and Hulda (Johnson) Nielsen at the family home in Upland. In 1929, the family moved to Trenton and he graduated from Trenton High School in 1942. He then moved to California where he worked for North American Aircraft. He returned to Trenton for a time and in 1944, moved to a farm in Upland, before moving to a farm in Kearney County in 1945.
On Oct. 24, 1946, he married Darleen Evers in Oberlin. He was a farmer in the Macon area before the family moved to Franklin in 1976 where he worked for the ASCS office for 17 years. He served as the mayor of Franklin from 1983-90.
He married Marge Vanderwege on May 31, 1997, in Franklin. He was a member of the I.O.O.F. Lodge No. 45, the Tehama Clowns, Nebraska Sod House Society, National Rifle Association, the Franklin County Historical Society and the First United Methodist Church in Franklin.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Darleen in 1997; and two brothers, Russell and Milton.
Survivors include his wife, Marge of Franklin; two daughters, Paula and husband, Rhn Jacobsen and Nikki Nielsen, all of Franklin; two step-children, Sara and husband, Tim Crabtree of Sioux City, Iowa and Nathan Parsons of Pratt, Kan.; two grandchildren; three step-grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Memorials are suggested to the I.O.O.F. Lodge No. 45 in Franklin or to The First United Methodist Church in Franklin.
Funeral services were March 26, 2002, at the First United Methodist Church in Franklin with Pastor Neil Kloppenborg officiating. Burial was in the Greenwood Cemetery in Franklin.
