MAYWOOD -- Donald LeRoy Covey, 61, died Monday (May 6, 2002) at Great Plains Regional Medical Center in North Platte.
He was born June 8, 1940, at Curtis to Donald Robert and Marie (Carstens) Covey. He graduated from Maywood High School in 1959.
He entered the U.S. Army in 1959, serving for 22 years retiring in 1981, as a Sgt. 1st Class from Fort Hood, Texas.
He was a Vietnam Veteran.
On November 24,1981, he married Peggy June Kirby at Belton, Texas.
He then worked for the Texas Department of Corrections as an Industrial Supervisor. They moved to Maywood in March 1988. He operated Bo's Tavern in Stockville for a year and worked for the City of Maywood for 2 years. He also worked at Channel 6 Satellite Tower until 1995.
He was a lifetime member of Veterans of Foreign Wars No. 3907 of Maywood and a member of the First Christian Church of Maywood.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one son, Bruce; son-in-law, Alan Overbay; and two grandsons.
Survivors include his wife, Peggy of Maywood; one son, Jeffrey Covey of Las Vegas, Nev.; two step-sons, Jerry Kirby and wife, Holly of Union, Ill. and Bobby Kirby and wife, Debbie of Taylorville, Ill; four step-daughters, Janet and husband, John Arthur of Atoka, Tenn., Lisa Kirby of Ripley, Tenn., Linda Overbay of Maywood and Barbara and husband, Donovan Knigge of Shickley; two brothers, John Covey and wife, Debbie of Maywood and Doug Covey and wife, Jenny of California; one sister, Judy and husband, Brad Wood of Stockville; 28 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were today at the First Christian Church in Maywood with Pastor Dale Heimer officiating. Burial will be in the Fort McPherson National Cemetery at Maxwell with military honors by the Fort Riley 596 Signal Company of Fort Riley, Kan. Memorials may be given in his name to the American Diabetes Association.
