WAUNETA -- Gene Bruce Harchelroad, 73, died Friday (Sept. 6, 2002) at Chase County Community Hospital in Imperial.
He was born Oct. 23, 1928, at Palisade to Harvey B. and Elizabeth (Curd) Harchelroad. He attended country school near Hamlet and continued his education at Wauneta, graduating from Wauneta High School in 1947.
On Oct. 7, 1950, he married Wilva D. Richards in Stratton. The couple settled in Wauneta before he was inducted into the U.S. Army on Jan. 11, 1951. He served during the Korean Conflict and was discharged on May 9, 1952. He returned to Wauneta where he took over the family Chevrolet dealership. He continued ownership, operation and expansion of Harchelroad Motors, celebrating 50 years of business in 2002.
He was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Wauneta and the Wauneta Volunteer Fire Department.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Survivors include his wife, Wilva of Wauneta; one daughter, Debra and husband, Dr. James Kemp of St. Louis, Mo.; two sons, Sid Harchelroad and wife, Carol of Imperial and Brian Harchelroad and wife, Michelle of Wauneta; one sister, Sandra and husband, Bill Williamson of Arapahoe; and nine grandchildren.
Funeral services will be Tuesday, 10 a.m., at the First United Methodist Church in Wauneta with the Rev. Michael Laing, the Rev. Matt Hoffman and Randy Hayes officiating. Interment will follow at Riverside Cemetery at Wauneta.
In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established.
