Sherri Lynn (Garratt) Blase

GOTHENBURG -- Sherri Lynn (Garratt) Blase, 39, died Thursday (Oct. 10, 2002) at her home in Gothenburg following a two-year battle with lung cancer.

She was born Dec. 16, 1962, in Gothenburg to Arlond Francis and Creta Edna (Andrews) Garratt. She attended Gothenburg Public Schools and graduated from Gothenburg High School in 1981. She attended Mid Plains Community College in North Platte and graduated from Kearney State College in 1987 with a degree in social work.

On May 16, 1987, she married Richard "Rick" Blase at the American Lutheran Church in Gothenburg. In 1988, she began working with her husband at McVay Memorial Chapel and in 1994, they purchased the funeral home and began operating it as Blase Memorial Chapel. In 2000, they purchased Blase-Wetzel Funeral Home in Curtis.

She was a member of the American Lutheran Church where she served on various committees and taught Wings and Bible School. She was a majority member of the Job's Daughters and also served on the boards of Gothenburg Public Library and Building Block's Child Care and Preschool. She was also a member of the Journey of Hope Cancer Support Group in Gothenburg.

Survivors include her husband, Rick of Gothenburg; three daughters, Jill and husband, Joe Loos of Ashland, Terri Blase of Lawrence, Kan., and Samantha Blase of Gothenburg; her parents, Arlond and Creta Garratt of Gothenburg; one sister, Kathy and husband, Mick Brosius of North Platte; two brothers, Don Garratt and wife, Sandy of Superior, Colo. and Roger Garratt and wife, Kris of Seattle, Wash.; and her mother and father-in-law, Harold and Shirley Blase of Central City.

Funeral services will be Sunday, 2:30 p.m., at the American Lutheran Church in Gothenburg with the Rev. Steve Berke, the Rev. Wendy Ruetten and the Rev. Jeff Ruetten officiating. Burial is in the Gothenburg Cemetery.

Visitation will be Friday and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., at Blase Memorial Chapel.

Memorials may be given to Lutheran Family Services or to a charity of donor's choice.

Blase Memorial Chapel of Gothenburg is in charge of arrangements.
