NORCATUR -- Leon Wood, 80, died Monday (Nov. 4, 2002) at the Decatur County Hospital in Oberlin.
He was born June 28, 1922, to Joel Chester and Ruth Ann (Rankin) Wood in Caldwell County, Mo. He was raised in Missouri and attended high school at Mountain Grove, Mo.
He served in the U.S. Army Air Corps in World War II.
On June 12, 1943, he married Veda May VanGundy in Norton, Kan. They made their home in Edmond, Kan., and Norton. He worked in the oil industry, as a farmer and was a former employee of Norton State Hospital.
He was a member of the American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars both of Lebanon.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and one son, Merrit Leon Wood.
Survivors include his wife, Veda of Norcatur; four sons, David Wood and wife, Tina of Omaha, Merlin Wood and wife, Teresa of Ft. Pierce, Fla., Dwight Wood and Dennis Wood of Norcatur; two daughters, Carol and husband, John Moye of Oberlin and Sandra and husband, Larry McNames of Grinnell, Kan.; two brothers, Mervin Wood of Newton, Iowa, and Elvin Wood and wife, Dixie of Canadian, Okla.; one sister, Rosalie and husband, Rudy Bowe of Gresham, Ore.; 12 grandchildren; seven step-grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; 13 step-great-grandchildren; and one step-great-great-grandchild.
Funeral services will be Friday, 2:30 p.m., at Pauls Funeral Home in Oberlin with the Rev. Charles Keller officiating. Interment will be at the Lyle Cemetery at Lyle, Kan.
