IMPERIAL -- Mabel Viola Leach Bernard, 95, died Wednesday (Jan. 15, 2003) at the Chase County Community Hospital in Imperial.
She was born April 18, 1907, at Dorchester, to Andrew and Fern Leach. Her father was a carpenter and the family moved wherever his work took them.
On Jan. 2, 1926, she married George Bernard. They made their home on a farm near the Dundy/Chase County line. She remained on the farm until she became ill a few weeks ago. She was a life-long supporter of 4-H and was recently part of an award given for four generations of 4-H members in her family.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, George; daughter, Lois Ann; three brothers; and three infant great-grandchildren.
Survivors include a daughter, Jeannine and husband, Arlyn Cox of Champion; son, Royce Bernard and wife, Cathy of Imperial; three sisters, Vernace Groff of Imperial, Sue Jackson and Maxine and husband, Carl Matson all of Cheyenne, Wyo.; son-in-law, Ralph Langhofer of Imperial; sisters-in-law, Johnnie Leach of Imperial and Mary Leach of Gillette, Wyo.; 11 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
Funeral services were Saturday, 10:30 a.m., at the United Methodist Church in Benkelman with the Rev. Norman Prather officiating. Interment followed at the Benkelman Cemetery.
A memorial has been established in her memory.
