Laura C. Manker, 81, died Sunday (Feb. 2, 2003) at Hillcrest Nursing Home in McCook.

She was born Nov. 8, 1921, in Hillview, Ill., to Harvey and Ruby Helen (Price) Schutz. She grew up at Hillview and graduated from Whitehall High School at Whitehall, Ill., in 1940. She graduated from business college at St. Louis, Mo., and worked for Darcy Advertising Company for five years.

On Feb. 16, 1945, she married Vernon "Bud" Manker at Mobile, Ala., and they spent most of their married lives at Hazelwood, Mo., where she was the school secretary for 20 years at the Garett Elementary School in the Hazelwood District of St. Louis. They came to McCook in 1996.

She was a member of the Villebrook Baptist Church, was active in the Headstart Program, and a member of the Missouri Association of Educational Secretaries.

She was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Glenn Schutz and Ralph Schutz; and one sister, Beryl Collins.

Survivors include her husband, Vernon "Bud" Manker of McCook; three sons, Mike Manker and wife, Neva, Thomas Manker and Jim Manker all of Indianola; one daughter, Joy and husband, Floyd Richter of O'Neill; one brother, Nobel Schutz; and six grandchildren.

Funeral services will be Wednesday, 2 p.m., at the Herrmann Memorial Chapel in McCook with the Rev. Stan Hendershot officiating. Interment will be in the Indian Hills section of the Indianola Cemetery at Indianola.

Memorials may be given in her name.
